Okay, the title's not exactly correct, but still that's the basic idea for a jacket with a pocket that disables your cellphone antenna:

Have you ever ruined a movie, an interview, or maybe even a sexy date because you forgot to turn your phone off? If so, then you’ll appreciate this clever design called the Escape Jacket by Victor Johansson! The inner lining applies the interference principles of a Faradays cage to effectively block all radio frequencies, disabling the antenna so the phone doesn’t go off while simultaneously saving the battery.

As Rachel Metz adds, "the designer notes" that "shoving your phone into the pocket could also be a delightfully dramatic way to end a phone call."

I'm not sure that it's very practical, but I'm intrigued by the idea that putting the phone in a special place that disables its functionality will be more reliable than remembering to turn it off and back on. There are a couple problems that our current manual system create:

  1. Having the phone go off in inappropriate locations because we forget to turn it off;
  2. Missing a call or text because we forget to turn the phone back on.

My kids both now have cellphones, and my wife and I are working to get them into the habit of remembering to text us when they're on their way to sports practice, going to the library, etc.– AND both turning off their phones when they need to, and switching them back on or checking to see if they're on. Of course, there are times I still forget to do this, but I'm hopeful that it won't take 10,000 hours of practice to get it right.
