If the concept of embodied cognition or extended minds seems like a newfangled invention of philosophers who've read too much science fiction, I highly recommend this essay by Rabbi Ethan Tucker on tefillin, which he describes as "one of the most powerful and beautiful ways that we transform our Torah into something concrete and transform our bodies into agents of God."
Tucker's piece came to my attention thanks to this Slate piece by Miriam Krule on arguments within orthodox Judaism about whether women should be allowed to wear tefillin.
